Tanguar Haor Climate-Resilient Boatmen Cooperative
A community-owned cooperative of traditional boatmen in Tanguar Haor that has transformed climate-vulnerable livelihoods through sustainable tourism, boat renovation, and skill development while building disaster resilience.
About This Cooperative
The Tanguar Haor Climate-Resilient Boatmen Cooperative was developed by Daahuk under its "Development for Profit" philosophy. The cooperative empowers local boatmen by renovating traditional boats, providing tourism and navigation training, and creating alternative income sources during off-seasons. This initiative directly contributed to winning the Project of the Year 2023 – Contribution to the Community award by PMI South Asia. The cooperative model has successfully integrated economic opportunity with climate adaptation, turning local assets into sustainable community businesses.
During the 2022 floods, the boatmen network under this cooperative played a vital role in creating a logistics pathway for relief distribution, demonstrating the practical strength of community-owned enterprises in disaster response.
